The move from handling mountains of paperwork at our desks, to handling megabytes of documents at our computers retained the ties which kept us in the office all day. But with the increased power, versatility and portability of laptops and handheld computers today, more and more of us are breaking free of the shackles of office life, and working wherever we happen to be.

From finishing off a report whilst on the train, to compiling letters sitting on a bench at the park, laptops enable us to really take advantage of technology, giving us freedom and flexibility. The performance divide between laptops and home computers is now largely negligible, with modern laptops packing a powerful punch in terms of processing power and storage capabilities.

Handhelds combine all the benefits of a briefcase full of diaries, address books, current documentation, planners and calculators, putting most of your office in your pocket. This is taking portability to the extreme, and with more wireless networks and mobile broadband, we can enjoy interconnected freedom – the oxymoron of the 21st century.
